Grand Illumination Night

Annual end-of-summer celebration held each August in Cottage City. Residents decorate their cottages with ornate Japanese and Chinese lanterns, which remain dark while people gather in the Tabernacle for a sing-along band concert. At the end of the concert, all the lights in the Tabernacle go out and then the lanterns on the cottages are dramatically “illuminated.” The Grand Illumination has been taking place for over a century.

Siam Niramit Show and Dinner

Our evening started with a buffet dinner, followed by a performance in the courtyard of dancers in traditional Thai clothing. However, the main event is the Siam Niramit show, which is held in the colossal 2,000-seat Ratchada Theatre, which according to the Guinness Book of World Records, boasts the largest stage in the world. It was built to accommodate the show’s monumental set pieces, a legion of performers, including real elephants, and amazing special effects, including boats floating along a realistic river. The show had the rather ambitious goal of portraying 700 years of Siam’s (now Thailand’s) history.

Famous boys' choir

The boys choir has been performing in the basilica since the 14th century (different boys I assume). At 1 pm on the dot, we were treated to the angelic voices of the 50 boys, aged 9 to 14, singing Virolai, a hymn written by Cataonia’s national poet, and Salve Regina. It gave us goosebumps.

Auliʻi Lūʻau

Kaua‘i’s only oceanfront lū‘au on the South Shore’s idyllic Po‘ipū Beach. There was a delicious all-you-can-eat buffet and endless Mai Tais. In 2011, the Sheraton Kauai Resort partnered with Urahutia Productions to put on shows that entertained, as well as educated guests in the history, lifestyles, and culture of the Polynesian people. It was phenomenal and well exceeded our expectations.

The Burning of the Man

The "Burning of the Man" is the massive, celebratory climax of the entire Burning Man event, and it's where the event gets its name. It takes place on the Saturday night before Labor Day, drawing nearly all 70,000+ participants to the open playa. After a spectacular performance by fire dancers, the pyrotechnics begin with a deafening show of explosions, rockets, and massive fireballs erupting from the Man himself, and continues until the Man is fully engulfed in flames as the fireworks reach their peak. As the Man burns, spectacular fireworks are launched from the structure itself, culminating in a massive explosion. The most anticipated moment is the final collapse, when the Man's skeletal frame finally gives way and crashes to the ground, sending a massive plume of fire and embers into the night sky.
