Outside the boundaries of the Keough Hot Springs Resort, and downstream from the resort pool, is a series of primitive natural pools known as the “hot ditch.” The pools, which are quite shallow, have temperatures in the low 90s

Travertine Hot Springs

Beautiful natural hot spring pools near Bridgeport, CA. The main pools are fed from water trickling over the edge of a colorful, “travertine”-stained rock formation that rises above them. Rock piles separate the water into three separate pools, with water flowing from one pool to the next, decreasing in temperature as it goes along. From the pools there are fabulous views of the Sierras.

Soak

Buckeye Hot Springs

Three natural pools that sit directly next to chilly Buckeye Creek. The two main sources emerge from the side of a steep grassy hillside at about 140 degrees and flow downward, cooling along the way before cascading over a cave in a mini-waterfall formation into the largest pool. The hot water is captured by man-made rock piles alongside the creek, creating three pools of varying temperature in the 95 to 110 degree range. The trail down to the pools from the parking lot is quite steep.

Myvatn Nature Baths

Myvatn’s version of the Blue Lagoon, but much less commercialized, less crowded, less, expensive, and surrounded by a more natural setting of steaming fumaroles from the nearby Hverir Geothermal Area. The water in the various pools in the lagoon are between 97 and 104°F, which is very comfortable and relaxing.

Blue Lagoon

The iconic and highly-visited geothermal spa just 12 miles from the Keflavik airport. It’s called the “Blue” Lagoon because of the water’s milky blue shade, which is due to its high silica content. The silica forms soft white mud found on the bottom of the lake lava rocks around it. The water is a comfortable 99–102 °F.

We bought the Comfort Package (the least expensive one), which included entrance to the lagoon, a silica mud mask, a towel, and a free drink of our choice. For our date and time slot that was $104 per person.

Series of outdoor thermal pools positioned directly below stunning man-made silica terraces that recreate the look of the lost Pink and White Terraces of Tarawera. The pools are fed by geothermal water drawn from 1.5 km underground, containing high concentrations of silica, magnesium, potassium, and sodium, which leaves your skin feeling silky. There are four distinct pools with temperatures typically ranging between 30°C and 40°C (86°F and 104°F), allowing you to choose the level of heat that is most comfortable.
