17 Palms Oasis
7.6-mile (RT) drive on a good dirt road to a beautiful palm oasis, which stood in stark contrast to the stark and barren desert around it. Short drive along a manageable wash off of Route 78.

Later it served as a supply and U.S. route in the 1860s and 1870s.
