2004 Spring Break on Ocracoke Island
April 26 to May 1, 2004 by Lolo
It was Spring Break once again, a time when we traditionally pile into the RV and head South towards palmetto trees and warm sea breezes. But, alas we had entered the era of high school sports and all the fanfare and commitment that go along with it. Andrew was now a freshman in high school running track and he had a mandatory track meet on the Monday of Spring Break week. I must admit we were all pretty bummed, but track was very important to him, so we toughed it out and decided to go on an abridged version of Spring Break Tuesday morning.
Hunting Island, our usual Spring Break destination, was just too far for such a short period of time, so we thought it might be nice to revisit the North Carolina beaches along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This had actually been our destination in our very first, and almost very last, RV trip (see our 1998 Rental RV trip to Virginia and North Carolina).
Although we had been to Hatteras twice before, we had never been as far as Ocracoke Island. The descriptions of it in the guidebooks sounded like just what we were looking for: National Park campground on the beach, miles of pristine beaches, quaint historical village, good biking, etc., etc.
Then on the way home we would stop in Virginia Beach to visit some very good friends that had recently moved there.
It wasn’t 10 days in Paradise, but it sounded like a pretty good compromise.
